In this day and age, where so many in-person interactions have been replaced with remote engagements, digital transformation has become fundamental. As a result, businesses and consumers are relying on their mobile devices more than ever – utilizing voice and text communications to navigate their personal and professional lives. But with more than 85 billion spam phone calls being placed globally each year – costing trillions of dollars in lost business and productivity – keeping both the voice and messaging ecosystem safe for consumers and attractive to business is critical.
In a recent interview with Mobile World Live, iconectiv CTO Chris Drake answered these questions, and discussed how to further build trust in communications, insights on new solutions to better identify legitimate businesses and more.
Each year, communications service providers (CSPs) worldwide lose over US$39 billion to fraud such as illegal robocalls, SMS phishing (“smishing”) and “wangiri” callback schemes, according to the Communications Fraud Control Association (CFCA) and analyst firms.
During the panel session, “Protect Your Customers from One-Ring Scams: Trusted Tools to Fight Fraud,” iconectiv telecom fraud expert David Estes will discuss how CSPs are upgrading their existing call-blocking analytics to identify calls from high-risk and unallocated number ranges and suspicious premium-rate numbers.
Years of illegal robocalls, SMS spam and fraud have undermined consumer trust in voice calls and text messages, including those from toll-free numbers. Restoring trust is critical for service providers and all the retailers, schools, healthcare providers and other organizations that depend on toll-free numbers to inform and engage consumers.
As a new co-chair of the ATIS SMS/800 Number Administration Committee (SNAC), iconectiv Senior Account Director Mike Gilbert will oversee key toll-free number industry initiatives such as ensuring consumer trust in voice calls and text messaging.
In an effort to stave off the more than 85 billion illegal robocalls placed each year, as well as SMS phishing (“smishing”) and other fraud, industry players have banded together to keep the voice and messaging ecosystem safe for consumers and attractive to businesses.
Abe Nejad, publisher of The Network Media Group, recently sat down with iconectiv Senior Vice President George Cray during Mobile World Congress 2022 in Barcelona to discuss the latest on STIR/SHAKEN, Registered Caller™ and industry trends.
This year, consumers will lose $40 billion to fraudulent robocalls. The deluge of illegal robocalls also has conditioned 58 percent of consumers to answer calls only from numbers they recognize. This makes it difficult, expensive and sometimes impossible for hospitals, schools and other legitimate organizations to reach consumers.
At a SIPNOC 2022 panel, Rich Call Data (RCD) Best Practices: Building Trust for Future Success, John Haraburda, Principal Solutions Engineer at iconectiv, will explore how RCD is poised to help increase call-answer rates by providing an enhanced caller ID display that includes a company’s name, logo and call intent.
With more than 85 billion spam phone calls placed globally each year costing trillions in lost business and productivity, keeping the voice ecosystem safe for consumers and attractive to business is an objective we all share. In the U.S., service providers and industry players have been focused on implementing solutions designed to ensure the integrity of communications networks and mitigate any call-answering hesitation.
During the SIPNOC 2022 panel session, SHAKEN Goes Global: Opportunities and Challenges for Service Providers and Regulators Worldwide, George Cray, Senior Vice President at iconectiv, will outline a set of shared, technological best practices to extend this trust-restoring framework across country borders.
At MWC Barcelona 2022, iconectiv will share examples of successful industry initiatives and technologies that are restoring consumer trust in voice calls and text messaging, which is paramount to helping ensure the success of enterprise digital transformation. Rebuilding consumer trust in voice calls and text messages — after years of being undermined by illegal robocalls, SMS spam and fraud — is critical to the mobile ecosystem and all the retailers, schools, health care providers and other organizations that depend on it to inform and engage consumers.
As companies gear up to spend approximately $2.8 trillion USD on digital transformation by 2025, network operators and the ecosystem that makes B2C communications possible, need to make sure their customers have the confidence that the calls and texts they are receiving are from legitimate companies.
In anticipation of MWC22, VanillaPlus magazine recently spoke with Peter Ford, Executive Vice President at iconectiv, regarding the impact digital transformation will have on connectivity and communications, as well as identity verification.
iconectiv estimates that CSPs lose up to 20% of their annual capital expenditure—$65 billion industry-wide—because of communication challenges, asset complexity and misunderstood inventory. Under pressure to deliver 5G, edge computing, virtualized networking and other capabilities, CSPs are using a common language for the deployment, interconnection and management of physical and virtual assets. In this VanillaPlus article, Eyad Alqadi and John Hayes explain how common language provides visibility for CSPs and their external organizations—such as partners and vendors—to easily understand and optimize their assets.
STIR/SHAKEN is a now widely-adopted protocol enabling telecoms to feed calling party attestation info to consumers when they receive a call from businesses and organizations of all types and sizes. George Cray, iconectiv Senior Vice President of Product along with an expert from CTIA, sits down with Dan Baker, editor from Black Swan Telecom Journal, to discuss the adoption of initiatives like Registered Caller.

People simply do not answer the telephone anymore unless they unequivocally know who is calling. That is hurting legitimate businesses that rely on voice calls to reach their customers. In the latest Network Media Group panel, experts from iconectiv, CTIA, and T-Mobile address the industry's progress in restoring consumer faith and confidence and how a new policy change is helping simplify the verification process.
Multi-access edge computing, virtualized network function and 5G give service providers powerful new ways to maximize scalability, flexibility and operational efficiency while enabling new services and revenue streams. In the latest Network Media Group panel, experts from iconectiv and AT&T explore how a common naming strategy plays a fundamental role in unlocking the true promise and commercial value of 5G.
Representing a major advance for the industry-driven work to mitigate illegal robocalls, the Secure Telephone Identity Governance Authority (STI-GA) announced the launch of new STIR/SHAKEN functionality. Beginning October 22, the new software expands caller ID authentication reach with the use of delegate certificates that allow Resp Orgs—the companies responsible for assigning toll-free telephone numbers—to directly join the SHAKEN ecosystem.
The Common Language International Advisory Board (IAB) and Technical Advisory Group’s (TAG) will be held in San Antonio TX, on June 21st, 22nd and 23rd. The advisory board discusses topics impacting the telecommunications industry, while the TAG session addresses day–to-day operational concerns in regard to specific code sets identified to satisfy subscriber business requirements.
Studies show that in the U.S., 76 percent of calls from an unidentified or unfamiliar number are left unanswered. While the deployment of the STIR/SHAKEN framework is helping mitigate spoofing and robocalling, some legitimate business calls may consequently be mislabeled as spam, even if they are not. To combat this, businesses and their numbers must be vetted, registered and verified by service providers to help outbound calls be delivered to consumers and displayed appropriately.

With illegal robocalls now representing nearly half of all unwanted calls in the U.S., according to the FCC, it’s no wonder that the lion’s share of calls from unidentified or unfamiliar calls (76%) are left unanswered. While verified information and initiatives like STIR/SHAKEN have helped mitigate illegal and unwanted robocalls, the telco industry must continue to develop additional frameworks to protect consumers and businesses.
